The Pros and Cons of Online Guitar Lessons

The Pros and Cons of Online Guitar Lessons Megan L. So youve heard about online guitar lessons but youre not convinced theyre right for you? Guitar teacher  Edward B.  shares the benefits and drawbacks he has learned from teaching live online lessons Live online guitar lessons are filling a much-needed gap in society’s need for lessons, especially for students in rural areas who don’t have access to music teachers, and busy students who have trouble fitting lessons into their schedules. I’ve given guitar lessons quite successfully via Skype and Google Hangouts, and have found this method of teaching benefits students in the following ways: Quality Teachers I believe it is better to have Skype lessons with an excellent teacher than it is to have in-person lessons with a mediocre teacher. Searching for a guitar teacher online gives you even more options to choose from since youre not restricted to your small local region. No Traveling You don’t have to fight traffic to get to your guitar teacher’s studio. Also, when a student is five or ten minutes late, I give them a courtesy call in case they forgot. But if they live 15 minutes away and they have a 30 minute lesson, it’s hardly worth it for them to come late. Taking lessons online means no missed lessons due to forgetfulness since the student and teacher can connect 30 seconds after the courtesy call. Convenient Scheduling There are more options for choosing the best day and time for the lesson when you look at all the teachers available online versus just the teachers in your local area. Convenience of Recording Lessons While students always have the option to record their face-to-face lessons, that almost never happens (at least, in the history of my teaching). But you can easily record Skype and Google+ lessons for review at a later time with software like Evaer and Super Tin Tin, or for audio only: Pamela MP3 Skype, or RecorderVodBurner. Immediate Practicing While face-to-face students must drive home before practicing what they learned, online students can practice immediately after the lesson when ideas are fresh. The first practice session will always be of higher quality when it is done immediately after the lesson than if it is done the next day, and the first practice session is the most important session of the entire week. Warming Up You can warm up right before your lesson, only stopping seconds before the lesson begins. This lets you show off your best playing to your teacher each week instead of starting rusty. Increased Student Performance Students actually spend more time performing during distance lessons than in face-to-face lessons. Don’t Have To Be In The Same Room You won’t need to cancel lessons because you had the flu two days before, because during online lessons you can’t pass illness on to your teacher. Transferring Instructional Music Files I can simply email mp3 audios and screenshare or email music documents. Of course there are also a few drawbacks to choosing online guitar lessons No Physical Touch Sometimes the most efficient way to achieve technical results with a student is to physically manipulate their wrists, fingers, elbows, etc. while their hands are on the strings. Your online guitar teacher wont be able to give you physical adjustments if needed.  Dependent Upon Internet Connection The student and teacher must both have a fast Internet connection, and even if they do, sometimes there are days when Internet backbones are lagging, ISPs are having trouble, etc., although that’s a rare occurrence. Glitches still happen sometimes with Skype and Google Hangouts but seem to be happening less as the technology develops.  Sound Quality Even with a fast Internet connection, sound quality does not resemble the quality of a CD or the quality of hearing the student in person. Having said that, I feel that I’m still able to judge tone quality acceptably well. Looking From a Different Angle Sometimes (but not very often), I’ll walk to the other side of the student in order to see what their hands look like from the other side, in cases where I have to look specifically at the left hand position. Since I can’t do that in an online guitar lesson, students have to reposition their webcams. Distractions Students may be more distracted at home by noises made by siblings, animals, neighbors, etc, than they would be at a teachers studio. All things considered, I believe there are effective ways of working around these issues. Interested in trying online guitar lessons? Find a great guitar teacher online now! Rules for Integers

Rules for Integers Integers are numbers which include all the positive and negative numbers and dont include fractions. Integers are denoted by Z. There are different rules which are applied to integers. Mentioned here are some useful rules applied for integers. Add/ subtract Integers: If the numbers have the same sign add the numbers and keep the sign. If numbers have different signs, subtract them and keep the sign of the integer with greater absolute value. Multiply/ Divide Integers: If the numbers have the same sign then the answer has a positive sign. If the numbers have opposite sign then the answer has a negative sign. Example 1: Find the solution for 3 [ 2 + (6 - 10) ]? Solution: Given is 3 [2 + (6 - 10) ] integers with different mathematical operations. Start with the inner bracket (6 -10) = -4 This gives 3 [2 + ( 4)]. Now 3 [ 2 4 ] = 3 [ -2 ]. Multiplying the integers with opposite signs gives 3 * - 2 = -6. Hence the solution to the question is -6. Example 2: Find the solution for 5 [ 7 + (12 - 15) ]? Solution: Given is 5 [7 + (12 - 15) ] integers with different mathematical operations. Start with the inner bracket (12 -15) = -3 This gives 5 [7 + ( 3)]. Now 5 [ 7 4 ] = 5 [ 3 ]. Multiplying the integers with same signs gives 5 * 3 = 15. Hence the solution to the question is 15.

What to Look For in Your Medical School Search

What to Look For in Your Medical School Search The following piece was written by Anubodh Sunny Varshney. He is a Dallas Fort Worth tutor for Varsity Tutors and current medical student at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Attending interviews at multiple medical schools isnt just for you to sell yourself; its also a valuable opportunity for you to gather some key information about different institutions all across the country. Below are some factors to think about when youre comparing these medical schools. Class size The size of your classes can range from the 50s up to the 250s each year. Small classes tend to build a more cohesive group and may allow for more personal interactions with faculty. However, large classes may bring the opportunity to make more friends who are similar to yourself, and in no way rule out the ability to build relationships with faculty. Think about whether or not you want to be in a more intimate environment versus a more traditional academic setting. Location The location of a school will affect your personal life, finances, clinical exposure, and many other factors. Be sure to weigh this heavily and think about your personal preference for an urban vs. suburban vs. rural location. Pre-Clinical Curriculum Many schools use a pre-clinical curriculum that falls somewhere on a spectrum between problem-based learning (PBL) and traditional lectures. PBL involves working through patient cases in a small group setting with faculty. This requires significant background reading and research to learn all of the aspects of the case. Evaluations usually involve a component of participation assessed by small group faculty as well as exams, though this can vary. This is considered a more active learning style, and suits many students well. In contrast, a lecture-based curriculum involves what most students are used to in college. Lectures are delivered and students are expected to take notes and do outside reading as necessary in order to better understand the material. Evaluations are usually via written exams. This style suits students who excel at comprehending and understanding material more passively. In reality, most schools now have a component of both PBL and lectures in varying fractions. Its important to understand that no matter what the curriculum, all schools must cover the minimum amount of material you need to take the USMLE Step 1 after your pre-clinical years. Also, realize that your score on this exam is one of the most significant factors taken into account when evaluating your residency application. So, be sure to look for a curriculum that will help you learn the best, not a curriculum that claims to be less rigorous. In the end, youll have to learn all of the material needed to move into your clinical years, so there are no shortcuts regardless of the curriculum. Hospital system During your clinical years, your goal will be to build the foundation of skills and knowledge you need to be a physician. In addition, you must have a wide exposure to medicine so you can decide your future career path. So, be sure to look out for schools where you will be provided with ample volume, autonomy, and variety in patient care. As a general rule, schools affiliated with more types of hospitals (private, public, government, etc.) tend to give students a broader exposure to medicine. Also, higher volume hospitals tend to allow students greater autonomy in evaluating patients. Student life This encompasses things like facilities, opportunities to be involved in extracurricular activities, and overall student well-being. Be sure to look at schools student centers and see what they offer (gyms, multipurpose rooms, study areas, etc.). Also, most schools will have numerous student groups. Be sure to look for schools that already have groups that align with your interests, or that are flexible in having students start new groups. Most importantly, be sure to speak with several current students on your visit and ask them how they like their medical school experience. Their opinions are your most valuable tool in getting an insider view at a particular school. Check out Sunnys tutoring profile. Why Students Should Consider a Major Before Picking a College - TutorNerds

Why Students Should Consider a Major Before Picking a College - TutorNerds 4 reasons students should think about which field of study before choosing a college Many high school students are watching their older peers send off final applications and go through the general process of choosing a college or university to attend next year. The college application process is a complicated one, and its important that students know which qualities to look for when narrowing down their choices. One of the things students should consider is which major field of study they plan on declaring once they reach their junior year. If students are not sure what they want to study they should think about fields they’re particularly interested in or careers that would help them reach their life goals. Thinking about this early on saves students the stress and hassle of transferring to a different college or taking unnecessary classes. 1. Time and money College takes up a lot of any student’s time and significant financial resources. If students know what they want to study they can avoid applying to colleges that dont offer a particular major, perhaps requiring an expensive and time-consuming transfer to a different university. Also, when students take general education classes, they have an opportunity to try out different subfields of a particular major or courses that count towards general ed but are still part of their major. If students arent sure what they want to do for their career at this point, they may end up spending more time and money than is necessary Our private Los Angeles college tutors are here to help you decide on a major. 2. Networking and social connections There are several feels that require a significant amount of networking and socializing within the workplace. Some colleges and universities are known for providing students with the opportunity to network with future colleagues as well as successful alumni. If students know they are going into a social field, they should consider universities that will help them get a foot in the door. These days, there are usually more people who want a job than there are positions to be filled in any given field so networking can make a big difference when it comes to landing an interview or an internship opportunity. 3. Self-reflection Thinking about potential majors is also a great opportunity for college applicants to reflect on their particular strengths and talents. A student’s college experience, as well as the job that follows, will be a lot more pleasant if the student plays to their strengths and works in a field that theyre good at. Many students know which topics they enjoy but dont necessarily know what theyre naturally talented in at the high school level. Figuring this out will make any student’s life a lot easier once they enter the college environment (READ: Finals Prep: Why You Should Book Your Los Angeles Tutor Now). 4. Smart career choices Once high school students decide on a few possible majors, theyll start to think ten years down the line when they begin a career. This is a significant and complex situation for a teen to be contemplating, but the decisions they make now will make a big difference in their adult life. Specific majors lead to specific careers, all of which offer students different opportunities. They should think about the type of budget they want to have as a working adult, what city or state they want to live in, whether they want to work for a large corporation or a small start-up company, whether they want to work a standard 9 to 5 in an office or work at home, and whether or not theyre willing to travel for significant periods of time. There are so many practical things for students to think about and the major they choose will determine their daily life for years to come. Great news, Orange County! How to Develop Creative Writing Skills in Children - ALOHA Mind Math

How to Develop Creative Writing Skills in Children Some may feel that writers are born not made creative writing, but in reality this is far from the truth. With the right environment and preparation, any child can embark onthe amazing journey of creative writing. Encourage reading: To be a good writer, a child needs exposure to different kinds of books and authors. The more he reads, the more he improves vocabulary and creativity without even realizing it. Do try to include poetry and various forms of writing as well as these will provide insights into different writing styles. Another interesting addition to your bookshelf would be to choose creative writing by children as a part of your child’s reading, which can be very inspirational. Diary writing: From when your child starts telling you all about her day, give her a diary to write it all down in. Writing activities for children develop story-telling skills much better than when trying to verbally relate all the happenings of the day. This will teach her to streamline her thoughts and structure the day into parts, along with using the correct words and language to make the story sound interesting enough to hold a reader’s attention. This can serve quite well as one of the first creative writing exercises your child tries to perform. Have fun together: Once you feel that your child’s diary writing skills have reached a point of proficiency try something a little more difficult, there are many activities you can come up with to keep her interested. Start with simple creative writing prompts, such as giving her a topic for debate, and asking her to write for or against the same. Support from school: If your child is really interested in the subject, teachers at school will also help out by suggesting creative writing exercises to improve the writing skills of students. Other activities for creative writing may include more exposure to diverse creative subjects like theater. If you are looking for creative writing classes in your neighborhood, do check out the English classes at Aloha USA. More details are on our website: http://www.aloha-usa.com.
